Also known as low blood sugar is a condition where there is a sudden drop in the level of blood sugar, which is very common in small toy breed puppies. It is usually brought on by some form of stress or shock. Things such as change of homes, long air flights, vaccinations, over-exursion (playing hard for a long period of time), or not getting adequate amount of rest can cause the blood sugar to drop to dangerously low levels. Small puppies can not eat a lot at a time and literally run out of fuel quickly. Therefore, it is very important that puppies be feed several times a day.
SYMPTOMS: Puppy will appear limp and lifeless. Eyes are unfocused and sometimes barely open. Their temperature will be below normal, shivering & trembling will occur. As the condition worsens, the puppy can go into a coma or convulsions, weakness, confusion, wobbly gait, and drooling from the mouth, or even seizures. Their gums will be pale (grayish white) instead of bright pink. Puppy can go in to shock, and if not cared for promptly and properly, results could be fatal.
TREATMENT: The blood sugar level must be raised immediately and condition must be treated. Honey or Karo Syrup given in small amounts (rubbed on gums and roof of mouth), several times over the period of 1 hour or more can relieve first symptoms. Also, Gatorade or Pedialyte will replace electrolytes which an ailing puppy needs. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS CONDITION.
